Despite the global spread of the second wave of covid-19, 152 tourist destinations have reduced their restrictions on hosting tourists. From 115 in last September, the number of countries that have reduced their travel restrictions today has reached 152. According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), nearly 59 destinations keep their borders closed to travelers. The UNWTO adds that Europe is the area where travel restrictions are eased the most, followed by the United States, Africa and the Middle East. Asia remains the continent where border closures are the most drastic. “The destinations having obtained the best scores on health and hygiene indicators, as well as on the environmental performance index, are among those which have eased the restrictions more quickly”, specifies the UNWTO. She also adds that those who choose to keep their borders closed tend to be in emerging economies with relatively low scores on health and hygiene indicators and the environmental performance index ”.
