Sahara: At Algeria's blackmail, the UN insists on the involvement of all parties

Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at 8:59 pm United Nations (New York) – Despite the repeated blackmail that Algeria desperately engages in over the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, the United Nations has just insisted , once again, on the paramount importance of the involvement of all parties to the conflict in the political process, conducted under the aegis of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. This was reiterated by the deputy spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Farhan Haq during his daily briefing, Wednesday in New York, when he answered a question on the latest maneuver in date of the Algeria, which rejected resolution 2602 adopted by the Security Council as well as the round table process. “We believe that there is still a possibility for all the regional parties and actors to come together” in the framework of the political process on the issue of the Sahara, underlined the spokesperson for the UN SG, noting that the new Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura will discuss with “all the parties and all the states concerned in the region” with a view to resuming this process. With all due respect to Algeria, it should be recalled that the Security Council in its most recent resolution on the Moroccan Sahara asked Mr. de Mistura to resume facilitation of the political process of round tables, with his four participants, namely Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the “polisario”. Even more, Algeria is considered by the Security Council as a party. This is why he urged him in his latest resolutions, including the 2602 of last Friday, to participate in the round tables and cited it five times, that is to say as many times as Morocco.
